Greetings:

As a fellow radio ham I'm taking this opportunity to tell
you of a project that I have started here in Laurium.
It concerns.......... "Saving Your License" (SYL)

I have seen three cases now, of "hams" losing their license,
because of one reason or another. I don't want this to
happen to you.

Here's the gist of "PROJECT SYL" [Saving Your License]

I'm taking an inventory of all of the hams licenses in the:

ITEM#: FOR:

1. CCRAA
2. KCRA
3. HARC
4. CCRAA/HARC V.E. TEAM MEMBERS
5. UPPER PENINSULA HAM DIRECTORY-2002

ITEMS 1-THRU-4 WERE COMPLETED ON DEC. 3, 2001.
ITEM 5 WAS COMPLETED ON 02/01/02.

FCC has stated that if one is "registered" by Dec. 3, 2001,they will
automatically assign you an FRN. (Federal Registration Number)
The FRN is a 10 digit number, and is needed for
all future dealings with the FCC]

Register at:

http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/uls/

[This is the FCC's "Universal Licensing Site"]

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FCC SITE (THE FCC'S ULS SITE) IS DOWN FOR MAINTENENCE
EACH NIGHT BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 2:15 am.
UPDATE: Beginning Friday, November 30, 2001, it was down all weekend, for
the transition to the new "CORES" system. It returned to service on Sunday,
 Dec. 2, 2001 at 8:00AM ET.

PLEASE REGISTER USING THE FCC ULS SITE (listed above). IF YOU USE THE FCC
"CORES" SITE, [www.fcc.gov] YOU 'WILL' RECEIVE A CORES ID, BUT THE TWO
DEPARTMENTS ARE NOT BI-DIRECTIONAL, I.E. REGISTERING IN "CORES" WILL 'NOT'
GIVE YOU AN "L" (LICENSE ID) NUMBER ! THIS IS IMPORTANT, AS ALL FUTURE
DEALINGS WILL REQUIRE US TO ENTER THE FCC'S DATA BASE VIA THE FCC'S "ULS"
 SITE AT:

http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/uls/

Also: Rule 97.23 of the FCC Rules & Regulations states, (in part)
"Revocation of the station license or suspension of the operator license may
result when correspondence from the FCC is returned as undeliverable because
the grantee failed to provide the correct mailing address.

[This involves a lot of the Houghton County residents, because of the "911"
 renumbering plan.
It also involves anyone who has moved recently and have not notified the FCC.]

You can register one of two ways:

1. On Line: Easiest, if you have a computer.
    Goto the FCC's ULS site:
    http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/uls/
Click on: REGISTER & follow the on-screen prompts.
Hint: Have your Social Security Number & CORES password handy.

IMPORTANT UPDATE !!!! After December 3, 2001 you will need both your
SS# and your Personal Identifier (CORES Password). Your password must be at
least six characters long [can be alpha-numeric] and no more than 15
characters long.....AND.....it is case sensitive. DO NOT USE YOUR CALL SIGN
AS YOUR PASSWORD ! Your FRN and your License ID ARE Public domain, and are
shown (Your SS# is NOT !). If your password is less than six characters,
the FCC will append asterisks to your password, to make it six characters
 long.

Example: If your password prior to Dec. 3, 2001 was sun .........then the new CORES password becomes: sun***

(Three asterisks added.) If it were more than 15 characters such as:
THEQUICKBROWNFOXJUMPEDOVERTHELAZDOGSBACK1234567890, YOUR NEW CORES PASSWORD
 BECOMES:
THEQUICKBROWNFO (15 CHARACTERS)
ALL FUTURE DEALINGS WITH THE FCC WILL REQUIRE ONE TO HAVE BOTH AN "FRN" AND A
 PERSONAL IDENTIFIER (PASSWORD).

2. On paper, using and FCC Form 160.
Obtain the "160" form from the FCC's Form page,
Fill out all items (The "TIN" they ask for [Taxpayer Identification
Number]is your Social Security Number. Send it, via U.S. Postal
   Service to the FCC at:

            FCC
            Attention: CORES Administrator
            Room: CY-C140
            445 12th St, SW
            Washington, DC 20554

The FCC Form 160 is on the Internet and can be downloaded at:

           http://www.fcc.gov/formpage.html

If you need help with any of this, please E-Mail me
(w8fwg@arrl.net) or telephone me at: (906) 337-2542

FACTS:

In the U.,S.A. call sign data base there are approximately
750,000 call signs.
At any moment, 30,000 of these are expired !
Each month some 1,000 call signs are returned to the unused pool.

You can check on the status of your own license, or any other
license, by going to:

http://www/qrz/com/expired/expired.html

Here you will find:

1. Calls that will expire in the next 30 days.
2. Calls that will be forfeited in the next 30 days.

IMPORTANT NOTE ! ON THE DATE OF THE EXPIRATION OF YOUR AMATEUR
LICENSE IT IS NO LONGER VALID! YOU MAY NOT 'TRANSMIT' DURING THE
2-YEAR PERIOD OF GRACE.

AFTER TWO YEARS, YOUR LICENSE IS CANCELLED AND YOU HAVE TO TAKE
THE EXAM OVER !

Your license "may" be in jeopardy !
